＜第６段落＞

Then suddenly he noticed with a start* 【that some of the grey clinker*, 《the ashy* incrustation 〔that covered the meteorite〕》, was falling off the circular* edge of the end】.

start→はっとすること　clinker→焼塊（燃焼後の灰）　ashy→灰まみれの　circular→丸い

It was dropping off in flakes* and raining down upon the sand.

flakes (flake)→一片

A large piece suddenly came off* and fell with a sharp noise 〔that brought his heart into his mouth〕.

came off (come off)→はがれる

＜第６段落　訳＞

その時突然彼は、隕石を覆っていた灰まみれの外殻で、いくらかの灰色の焼けかすであるのが丸い縁の端から落ちていくというハッとすることに気づいた。それはかけらとなって落ち、砂の上に降り落ちた。大きなかけらが突然はがれ、心臓が口に入るかのような鋭い音を立てて落ちた。

For a minute he scarcely realised what this meant, and, 《although the heat was excessive*》, he clambered* down into the pit 〈close to the bulk*〉 to see the Thing more clearly.

excessive→過度な　clambered (clamber)→よじ登る　bulk→巨大なもの

He fancied (even then) 【that the cooling of the body might account* for this】, but 〔what disturbed* that idea〕 was the fact 【that the ash was falling only from the end of the cylinder】.

account→原因となる　disturbed (disturb)→妨げる

＜第７段落　訳＞

一分間、彼はほとんどこの意味に気づいておらず、熱が過剰なのにもかかわらず、彼は巨大な物体の穴の中に、その「モノ」をもっと明確に見るために下りていった。彼はその時でさえ、本体の冷却はこれの原因となっているかもしれないということを想像していたが、その考えを妨げたのは、灰が円筒の端からのみ落ちているという事実であった。

And then he perceived 【that, 《very slowly》, the circular top of the cylinder was rotating on* its body】.

rotating on (rotate on)→～を中心に回転する

It was such a gradual* movement that he discovered it only through noticing 【that a black mark 〔that had been near him five minutes ago 〕was now at the other side of the circumference*】.

gradual→徐々の　circumference→周囲　

such A that SV構文が見えます。とてもAなのでVするという意味です。

(Even then) he scarcely understood what this indicated*, 【until he heard a muffled* grating* sound and saw the black mark jerk* forward an inch* or so】.

indicated (indicate)→示す　muffled (muffle）→はっきり聞こえない　grating→耳ざわりな　jerk→ぐいと動く、急に動く　inch→インチ（１インチ＝2.54cm）

see知覚動詞です。see O Vで「OがVするのを見る」という感じです。

Then the thing came upon* him in a flash*.

came upon (come upon)→襲う　in a flash→一瞬

The cylinder was artificial*—hollow—with an end 〔that screwed* out〕!

artificial→人工の　screwed (screw)→ねじって締める

Something within the cylinder was unscrewing* the top!

unscrewing (unscrew)→蓋をねじって外す

“Good heavens*!” said Ogilvy. “There’s a man in it—men in it! Half roasted* to death! Trying to escape!”

Good heavens！→驚いた！　roasted (roast)→焼く

＜第８段落　訳＞

そしてその時、彼はとてもゆっくりと本体を中心に円筒の上の方が回転しているのに気づいた。それはとてもゆっくりとした動きだったので彼は、５分前に近くにあった黒い印が周の反対側にあることに気づくことを通してでしかそれを発見できなかった。その時でさえ、はっきり聞こえず耳ざわりな音を聞き黒い印が１インチかそこら急に動くことを見るまでは、彼はほとんどこれが何を示しているのか理解していなかった。そして瞬時に彼をある考えが襲った。「その円筒は人工のもので、空洞で、ねじって締める先端がある！」「何か円筒の中にいるものがてっぺんの蓋をねじって外している！」というものである。「驚いた！」とオグルビーは言った。「中に人がいるー人々がいる！　半分焼かれて死にかけているんだ！　逃げようとしているんだ！」

The thought of the confined* creature was so dreadful* to him that he forgot the heat and went forward to the cylinder to help turn*.

confined (confine)→閉じ込める　dreadful→恐ろしい　turn→回すこと

毎度おなじみso～that SV構文です。

But luckily the dull* radiation* arrested* him 【before he could burn* his hands on the still-glowing metal】.

dull→鈍い　radiation→放射　arrested (arrest)→注意を引く　burn→やけどする

At that he stood irresolute* for a moment, 《then turned》, 《scrambled* out of the pit》, and set off* running wildly* into Woking.

irresolute→ぐずぐずした、ためらって　scrambled (scramble)→這い上がる　sef off→出発する　wildly→やみくもに

The time then must have been somewhere about six o’clock.

He met a waggoner* and tried to make him understand, but the tale 〔he told〕 and his appearance were so wild*—his hat had fallen off in the pit—that the man simply drove on*.

waggoner→荷馬車の御者　wild→荒っぽい　drove on (drive on)→車を走らせ続けた

makeは使役動詞です。そして、 例のso～that SVも登場です。

He was equally* unsuccessful with the potman* 〔who was just unlocking the doors of the public-house* by Horsell Bridge〕.

equally→同様に　portman→飲み屋の店員　public-house→パブ（イギリスの大衆酒場）（ハリーポッターにも出てきた）

The fellow* thought 【he was a lunatic* at large】 and made an unsuccessful attempt to shut him into the taproom*.

fellow→男　lunatic→気がふれた　taproom→酒場

当時、狂気は月の満ち欠けによって発生すると考えられていたそうです（「luna」が「月」）。これを知って、何とは言えませんが一つ謎が解けました。

That sobered* him a little; and 【when he saw Henderson, 《the London journalist》, in his garden】, he called over the palings* and made himself understood*.

sobered (sober)→真面目にする　palings (paling)→柵　made himself understood (make oneself understood)→自分の考えを理解してもらう　

“Henderson,” he called, “you saw that shooting star last night?”
“Well?” said Henderson.
“It’s out* on Horsell Common now.”

out→現れて

“Good Lord!*” said Henderson. “Fallen meteorite! That’s good.”

Good Lord=Good heaven=驚いた！

“But it’s something more than a meteorite.
It’s a cylinder—an artificial cylinder, man!

「man」は「お前さん」みたいに呼びかけ的なものだと思います。

And there’s something inside.”
Henderson stood up with his spade* in his hand.

spade→シャベル

“What’s that?” he said. He was deaf* in one ear.

deaf→耳が聞こえない

目が見えない→blind　話せない→mute

＜第10段落　訳＞

閉じ込められた生き物がいるという考えはとても恐ろしかったので、オグルビーは熱を忘れ、ふたを回すことを助けるために円筒の方へ進んだ。でも幸運なことに、まだ光っている金属の上で彼の手がやけどをする前に鈍い熱の放射が彼の注意を引いた。彼は少しの間ためらっていたが、その後向きを変え、穴から這い上がり、やみくもにウォーキングへ走り出した。そのときの時刻はだいたい6時ごろだったに違いない。彼は荷馬車の御者に会い、彼を理解させようとしたが、彼が語る話と外見はとても荒っぽかったのでー彼の帽子は穴に落ちてしまっていたー男はただ車を走らせ続けた。彼はホーセル橋のそばのパブのドアをちょうど締めようとしていた飲み屋の店員に対しても同様に失敗した。その男は、彼が非常に気がふれていると思い、酒場の中にに閉じ込めようといううまくいかない試みをした。そのことはオグルビーを少し真面目にし、ロンドンのジャーナリストであるヘンダーソンに彼の庭で会ったとき、柵越えに彼を呼び、自分の考えを理解してもらおうとした。
「ヘンダーソン」と彼は呼んだ。「流れ星を昨夜見たのかい？」
「え？」とヘンダーソンは言った。
「今、ホーセル公有地に現れているんだ」
「驚いた！」とヘンダーソンは言った。「落ちた隕石か！それはいい！」
「でも隕石以上のものだ。円筒ー人工の円筒だってよ、お前さん！そして何かが中にいるんだ」
ヘンダーソンは手にシャベルをとって立ち上がった。
「それって何かい？」と彼は言った。彼は片方の耳が聞こえない。
