こんにちは。萃聚（すいじゅ）です。このページでは宇宙戦争第２章の第11～14段落の文法分析＆和訳を行っていきます。
＜説明＞
- １段落ごとに、原文と訳を書いています。
- わかりにくい副詞、形容詞、接続詞、関係詞の句・節は、それぞれ ()、〈〉、【】、〔〕のカッコでくくっています。
- カンマが両端にある挿入句・節（補足説明をする役割）は、《》のカッコでくくっています。
- 中学生の英語力を超える単語・句だと僕が思ったものは、「*」印をつけて青文字で意味を文末に記載しています。また、原形や単数形をカッコの中に示しています（例：「went (go)→行く」）。原則、Genius英和辞典に拠りますが、それに載っている意味が本文に当てはまらなかった場合にはネットの辞書を使用する場合があります。なお、言うまでもないことかもしれませんが、「宇宙戦争」はイギリス英語なので、語尾が「ise」になるなどの変化があります。
- 一度出てきた単語の意味は、原則、もう一度書きませんのでご了承ください。

Ogilvy told him all 〔that he had seen〕.speak, talk, say, tellの中で、後ろに人が取れるのはtellのみです。speak, talk, sayはすべてtoなどの前置詞がいります。
Henderson was (a minute or so) taking it in*.
taking in (take in)→受け入れる
Then he dropped his spade, 《snatched* up his jacket》, and came out into the road.
snatched (snatch)→ひったくる
The two men hurried back at once to the common, and found the cylinder still lying in the same position.
find知覚動詞で、find O Ving「OがVしているのを見つける」が使われています。
But now the sounds inside had ceased, and a thin circle of bright metal showed* between the top and the body of the cylinder.
showed (show)→現れる
Air was either entering or escaping at the rim* with a thin, sizzling* sound.
rim→へり sizzling (sizzle)→シューシューという
＜第11段落 訳＞
オグルビーはヘンダーソンに見たものすべてを話した。ヘンダーソンは１分かそこらで受け入れていた。そして彼はシャベルを落とし、ジャケットをとって道に出た。２人は急いですぐに公有地に戻り、円筒がまだ同じ位置に横たわっているのを見つけた。だが、その中の音はなくなっていて、輝く金属の薄い円が円筒の本体と上部の間に現れていた。薄いシューシューという音を立てて、空気がへりのあたりで入るか出ていくかしていた。

イギリス英語では learn-learnt-learntなど多少不規則活用もアメリカ英語と異なります。

棒で、うろこ状の燃える金属をトントンとたたいた後、彼らは耳を傾けて、返答がなかったので、彼らは両方とも、中にいる人もしくは人々は意識がないか死んでいると断定した。

consolation→慰め went off (go off)→立ち去る
One* can imagine them, (covered with sand, excited and disordered*),(running up the little street in the bright sunlight 【just as the shop folks were taking down their shutters* and people were opening their bedroom windows】).

このoneは話し手も含むようです。
Henderson went into the railway station at once, in order to* telegraph* the news to London.
in order to→～するために telegraph→電報を打つ
The newspaper articles* had prepared men’s minds* for the reception* of the idea.
articles→記事 minds→注意 reception→受け入れ
＜第13段落 訳＞
もちろん2人はまったく何もできなかった。彼らは慰めと約束を叫び、再び助けを得るために町に戻り立ち去った。我々は、砂まみれになり、興奮して、心身の調子が乱れ、店の人々がシャッターを下ろして寝室の窓を開けているちょうどそのときに輝く陽光の中、小さい通りを走っていった彼らを想像することができる。ヘンダーソンは知らせの電報をロンドンに打つためにすぐに鉄道の駅に入った（※ヘンダーソンはジャーナリスト）。その新聞記事はその考えを受け入れるために人々の注意の準備をした。

なお、「the number of～」は「～の数」という意味で、aとtheでは全然意味が違っちゃいます。あと、unemployedでなぜか思い出してしまったのですが、ニート（NEET）＝not in education, employment or training です。
That was the form* 〔the story* took〕.

thatというのは"dead man from Mars"のことでしょう。
I heard of it first from my newspaper boy about a quarter to nine when I went out to get my Daily Chronicle*.
Daily Chronicle→デイリー・クロニクル紙（当時発行されていたイギリスの新聞）
daily→日々の dairy→酪農 diary→日記 です。あと、chronicleは「年代史」という意味もあります。
I was naturally* startled*, and lost no time* in going out and across the Ottershaw bridge to the sand-pits.
naturally→自然に was startled (be startled)→びっくりした lose time in (lose time in)→時間を浪費する
＜第14段落 訳＞
８時までにたくさんの少年と無職の人がすでに公有地の方へ「火星からの死んだ人々」を見に出発していた。その言葉が記事がとった表現形式だった。私は最初に新聞少年から、8時45分ごろにデイリークロニクル紙を取りに外に出たときに、それを聞いた。私は自然にびっくりし、時間を全く浪費せずに外に出て砂採取場のところへオターショウ橋を渡って行った。
