このページでは宇宙戦争第１章の第６～10段落の文法分析＆和訳を行っていきます。

＜第６段落＞

And 【before we judge of them too harshly*】 we must remember 〔what ruthless* and utter* destruction 〔our own species* has wrought*〕, not only upon animals, such as the vanished* bison and the dodo, but upon its inferior races*〕.

「not only…but～」の構文があります。

The Tasmanians*, 《in spite of *their human likeness*》, were entirely* swept out of existence in a war of extermination* 〈waged by European immigrants*〉, in the space* of fifty years.

Tasmanians→タスマニア人（オーストラリアの南東のタスマニア島にいた人たち）　in spite of→～にもかかわらず　likeness→類似　entirely→完全に　extermination→絶滅　waged (wage)→行う　immigrants (immigrant)→移民　space→間

ヨーロッパ人がタスマニア人を完膚なきまでに絶滅させたというのは本当の話です。

Are we such apostles* of mercy* as to complain* 【if the Martians warred* in the same spirit】?

apostles (apostle)→擁護者　mercy→慈悲　complain→不平を言う　warred (war)→戦争をする

「such A as to V」で「VするほどのA」という意味になります。

＜第６段落　訳＞

侵略してくる火星人を厳しく悪だと断定する前に、私たちは私たち自身の種が、バイソンやドードーなどの動物だけでなく劣った人種に対しても行った、無慈悲で徹底的な破壊のことを思い出さなくてはならない。 タスマニア人は我々白人との人間としての類似にもかかわらず、ヨーロッパからの移民により行われた戦争で50年の間に存在が完全に一掃された。 もし火星人が、私たちがその他の種に対して行ったのと同じ精神で戦争を仕掛けてきたとして、私たちは不平を漏らせるほど慈悲的な行為をしていただろうか？

instruments (instrument)→道具　permitted (permit)→許す　trouble→厄介事

もともとは 「If our instrument had permitted it, we might …」という形だったんですが、仮定法過去完了ではIfを省略してhadを主語の前に持っていくことができるので、こういう形になったのです。

Men (like Schiaparelli*) watched the red planet—it is odd*, by-the-bye*, 【that (for countless* centuries) Mars has been the star of war】—but failed* to interpret* the fluctuating* appearances* of the markings* 〔they mapped* so well〕.

Schiaparelli→スキャパレリ（火星研究で有名なイタリアの学者）　odd→異常な　by-the-bye→ついでながら　countless→無数の　failed (fail)→失敗する　interpret→解釈する　fluctuating (fluctuate)→変動する　appearances (appearance)→外見　markings (marking)→模様　mapped (map)→地図にしるす

スキャパレリさん、火星の表面に線上の模様を発見したと発表したところ英語に翻訳される際にその模様がcanal（運河）と訳されてしまい、火星に人工的なものがあるというデマが広がることになってしまったそうです。

＜第７段落　訳＞

火星人は驚くべき繊細さで地球への下降を計算し ―彼らの数学の学識は明らかに私たちをはるかに超過していた― そしてほとんど完璧な火星人全員の一致で、準備を実行したように思える。 もし私たちの計器（の能力が）許したのならば、19世紀に遠く後方で集まる厄介事を見られたかもしれないのに。 スキャパレリのような人がその赤い星を観察したが ―それは異常で、ついでながら、無数の世紀の間、火星は戦争の星であった― だが、彼らは地図にしっかり表したはずの模様の外見が変動することの解釈ができなかった。 その間ずっと、火星人は用意をしていたに違いない。

I am inclined to* think 【that this blaze* may have been the casting* of the huge gun, 《in the vast pit* 〈sunk* into their planet〉》, 〔from which their shots were fired at us〕】.

たぶんイメージとしては、火星に巨大な穴があって（掘られて）、その中ででっかい大砲を作って、その大砲で地球へ射撃したんだと思います。

Peculiar* markings, 《as yet* unexplained*》, were seen near the site of that outbreak* during the next two oppositions.

＜第８段落　訳＞

カンマが見当たりませんが、palpitating以下が分詞構文となっているんだと思います。

こちらはカンマがありますし、moving以下確実に分詞構文です。

invisible→見えない

He compared* it to a colossal* puff* of flame* 〈suddenly and violently* squirted* out of the planet〉, “as flaming gases rushed out* of a gun.”

compared (compare) …to～→…を～にたとえる　colossal→巨大な　puff→一吹き　violently→猛烈に　squirted (squirt)→噴出する rushed (rush) out→飛び出す

＜第９段落　訳＞

その騒動は今から6年前私たちに突然起こった。 火星が衝に到達したとき、ジャワのラヴェルは、火星の高温で光るガスの巨大な発生の驚くほどの情報にドキドキしながら、天文学のやりとりの電報を打った。 それ（ガスの発生）は20日の夜12時の直前に起こった。そして彼がすぐに頼った分光器は、この地球に向かって非常に大きい速度で動いている主に水素の燃えるガスのかたまりを示した。 この炎の噴射は12時15分ごろには見えなくなった。 彼はそれを突然猛烈に火星の外に噴出された巨大な炎の一吹きにたとえた。「大砲の外に飛び出した炎のガスのような」と。

A singularly* appropriate* phrase* 〔it proved〕.

singularly→特に　appropriate→適切な　phrase→言い回し

前文の「as flaming gases rushed out of a gun」を受けて、適切な言い回しだ、と言っているわけです。

Yet (the next day) there was nothing of this in the papers 〈except a little note in the Daily Telegraph〉, and the world went in ignorance* of one of the gravest* dangers 〔that ever threatened* the human race〕.

ignorance→無知　gravest (grave)→重大な（本文では最上級）　threatened (threaten)→脅かす

「paper」は可算名詞なら新聞とか、レポート、論文とかの意味になります。

I might not have heard of the eruption* at all 【had I not met Ogilvy, 《the well-known astronomer*》, at Ottershaw】.

先ほどと同じく、Ifが省略されていてhadが前に出ている仮定法過去完了です。

He was immensely* excited at the news, and (in the excess of his feelings) invited me up to* take a turn with him that night in a scrutiny* of the red planet.

immensely→とても　invited(invite)…to V→…にVするよう勧める　scrutiny→調査

＜第10段落　訳＞

炎の噴射を表す特に適切な言い回しだった。 しかしその次の日、日刊テレグラフ紙の小さな短い記事を除いてはこのことについて何も新聞に載っていなくて、そして、世界は今までに人間の種を脅かす最も重大な危機の一つに無知であった。 私はよく知られた天文学者であるオグルビーとオターショウ（イギリスの地名）で会わなければ、その爆発を全く耳にしなかったかもしれない。 彼はとてもその知らせに興奮していて、感情が過剰な中、あの夜、その赤い星の調査を自分と一緒にするように私を誘った。
