このページでは宇宙戦争第１章の第１～５段落の文法分析＆和訳を行っていきます。

＜ 第１段落＞

No one would have believed (in the last years of the nineteenth century) 【that this world was being watched keenly* and closely by intelligences* 〈greater than man’s and yet* as mortal* as his own〉】; 【that 【as men busied themselves* about their various concerns*】 they were scrutinised* and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly* as a man 〈with a microscope〉 might scrutinise the transient* creatures 〔that swarm* and multiply* in a drop of water〕】.

keenly→鋭く　intelligences (intelligence)→知的生命体　 and yet→しかし　mortal→死ぬ運命にある　busied themselves (busy oneself)→忙しい　concerns→関心事　scrutinised (scrutinise)→観察する　narrowly→念入りに　transient→儚い　swarm→群れる　multiply→増殖する

greater than man’sとas mortal as his ownはそれぞれ一つの大きな形容詞となってintelligencesにかかっているわけです。２語以上の修飾は後置修飾となりますから。

(With infinite complacency) men went (to and fro)* over* this globe about their little affairs*, serene* in their assurance* of their empire over matter.

to and fro→あちこちに　went (go) over→渡る　affairs (affair)→事柄　serene→平和な　assurance→確信

It is possible 【that the infusoria* 〈under the microscope〉 do the same】.

infusoria→繊毛虫類

No one gave a thought to* the older worlds of space as sources* of human danger, or thought of them (only to dismiss* the idea of life upon* them as impossible or improbable*).

gave(give) a thought to→～を考える　sources (source)→原因　dismiss→取るに足らないものとする　upon≒on　improbable→起こりそうにない

It is curious to recall* some of the mental habits* of those departed* days.

recall→思い出す　habits (habit)→習慣　departed→過去の

この物語全体は回想している感じで過去形ですが、この５文目は「is」と現在形になっていますから、これは語り手にとっての「今」のことを言っているのでしょう。departed days（過去の日々）というのは今までの文で述べてきた、人々が宇宙人や宇宙に関心を一切向けていなかったことの頃を表していて、mental habitsというのはそういう人間の心の様子、思考のことを表しているのでしょう。

(At most) terrestrial* men fancied* 【there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary* enterprise*】.

terrestial→地球上の　fancied (fancy)→空想する　missionary→伝える　enterprise→事業

inferior to～ですが、「～より劣る」という意味で、juniorやsenior同様、語尾がorなので「～より」はthanではなくtoです。

Yet (across the gulf* of space), minds* 〔that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts 〔that perish*〕〕, 《intellects* vast and cool and unsympathetic*》, regarded* this earth with envious* eyes, and (slowly and surely) drew their plans against us.

gulf→深淵　minds (mind)→人（ここでは火星人）　perish→滅びる　intellects (intellect)→知性　unsympathetic→非情な　regarded (regard)→眺める　envious→嫉妬の

And (early in the twentieth century) came the great disillusionment*.

disillusionment→幻滅

最後の文、And the great disillusionment came early in the twentieth century.が元の文章で、後半の「20世紀初頭に来たよ」というのを強調したいがために、位置が入れ替わる倒置が起こっているんでしょう。

＜第１段落　訳＞

19世紀の末期の頃、人々より優秀だが人々と同じく死ぬ運命にある知的生命体によってこの世界が鋭く、近くで観察されていたことや、人々が様々な関心事に忙しかったときに、人々が顕微鏡で水の底に群れて増殖する儚い生き物を観察するのとほとんど同じくらい念入りに人々が調査・研究されていたことは誰も信じていなかっただろう。 果てしない独善を持つ人々は、帝国が安泰で平和だという確信を持ち、小さな事柄について地球のあちこちへ渡った。 顕微鏡の下の繊毛虫類も、同じことをしていたと考えられる。 人間の危険の原因として古い宇宙の世界を考える人は誰もいないし、古い宇宙の世界を考えたとしても、結果、不可能で起こりそうにないとして生命が宇宙にいるという考えを捨て去ることとなるだろう。 過去のそうした人々の思考を思い出すことは好奇心をそそられる。 せいぜい地球の人々だけが、地球人より劣っていて、（地球の文化を）伝える事業を歓迎する用意ができている他の生物が火星に住んでいるかもしれないと空想しただろう。 しかし宇宙の深淵の向こう側では、大きく冷たく非情な知性を持つ火星人が、滅びる動物へ人々が向けるように私たちの方を、この地球を嫉妬の目で眺めていて、ゆっくりと確実に私たちに対する計画を練っていた。 そして20世紀初頭、大きな幻滅がやってきた。

＜第２段落＞

The planet Mars, 《I scarcely need remind* the reader*》, revolves about* the sun at a mean* distance of 140,000,000 miles, and the light and heat 〔it receives from the sun〕 is barely* half of that 〈received by this world〉.

remind→思い出させる　reader→読者　revolves (revolve) about→～のまわりをまわる　mean→平均　barely→辛うじて

scarcelyは否定の意味を持ちますので、助動詞のneed（肯定文使用不可）が使えるわけです。

It must be, 《if the nebular hypothesis* has any truth》, older than our world; and 【long before this earth ceased* to be molten*】, life (upon its surface*) must have begun its course*.

nebular hypothesis→星雲説（太陽の周囲を回る星間物質が固まって惑星ができたという説）　ceased (cease)→しなくなる　molten (melt)→溶ける　surface→表面　course→過程

The fact 【that it is scarcely one seventh* of the volume of the earth】 must have accelerated* its cooling to the temperature* 〔at which life could begin〕.

one seventh→７分の１　accelerated (accelerate)→加速する　temperature→気温

thatは同格（「～という」という意味）のthatです。factは同格thatの相手の代表です。

It has air and water and all 〔that is necessary for the support of animated* existence*〕.

animated→活発な　existence→存在

＜第２段落　訳＞

読者に思い出させる必要はほぼないだろうが、火星という惑星は太陽のまわりを平均距離1億4000万マイル（1マイル≒1.6㎞）で回っていて、太陽から受け取る光と熱は、地球が受け取る光と熱の辛うじて半分である。 もし星雲説が何らかの真実であったとしたら、火星は私たちの世界より古いに違いないし、この地球が溶かされなくなったころよりずっと前に、火星の上で生命が進化の過程を始めていたに違いない。 火星が地球の体積のわずか7分の1であるという事実は、生命が誕生できる温度への冷却を加速させたに違いない。 火星には、空気、水、生き生きした存在（生物）の助けとなるために必要なすべてのものがあった。

＜第３段落＞

Yet so vain* is man, and so blinded* by his vanity*, 【that no writer*, 《up to* the very end of the nineteenth century》, expressed* any idea 【that intelligent* life might have developed* there far, or indeed at all, beyond* its earthly* level】】.

vain→うぬぼれた　blinded→目がくらんだ　vanity→虚栄心　writer→作家　up to→～に至るまで　expressed (express)→表現する　intelligent→知性を持った　developed (develop)→発展する　beyond→超えて　earthly→地球の

いろいろと分かりづらい倒置です。挿入句を抜いたもともとの文章は「man is so vain and so blinded by his vanity that no writer expressed any idea」で、so…that～構文が使われているのが見えます。「とても…なので～する」と「～するほど…」という２つの訳し方があります。あと、any idea thatのthatはまた同格です。

Nor was it generally* understood 【that 【since Mars is older than our earth, with scarcely a quarter of the superficial* area and remoter* from the sun】, it necessarily* follows* 【that it is not only more distant from time’s beginning but nearer its end】】.

generally→一般には　superficial→表面の　remoter (remote)→遠い(本文では比較級)　necessarily→必ず　it follows (follow) that…→(必ず)…ということになる

「nor was it…」とありますが、「nor V S」の形で、前文を受けて「SもまたVでない」となります。倒置がないとすれば、「it was generally understood that…」となり、it 形式主語でthat以下が真の主語だということもわかります。そうそう、あと、後ろの方に「not only…but ～」の構文も見えます。alsoは省略OKです。onlyの代わりにsimply, just, merelyも使えます。そして、not only A but also Bの同意表現は B as well as Aです。

＜第３段落　訳＞

だが、人々はあまりにもうぬぼれて虚栄心に目がくらむので、知性を持った生命が遠く火星で発展し、また、実に全く、地球のレベルを超すような発展をしたかもしれないという考えを、19世紀が終わる直前に至るまで、どの作家も文章に表現しなかった。 火星は私たちの地球より古く、表面積はわずか4分の１で、太陽からより遠いので、始まりからより時間が立っているだけでなく終わりも必ずより近いことも一般には理解されることがなかった。

＜第４段落＞

The secular* cooling 〔that must someday overtake* our planet〕 has already gone far indeed with our neighbour.

secular→永年の　overtake→襲う

Its physical* condition is still largely* a mystery, but we know now 【that (even in its equatorial* region) the midday* temperature barely approaches that of our coldest winter.

physical→自然　largely→大部分は　equatorial→赤道付近の（ちなみにエクアドル(ecuador)はスペイン語で「赤道」という意味）　midday→真昼の

Its air is much more attenuated* than ours, its oceans have shrunk* 【until they cover but* a third of its surface】, and 【as its slow seasons change】 huge snowcaps* gather and melt about either pole* and periodically* inundate* its temperate* zones.

That last stage of exhaustion*, 《which to us is still incredibly remote》, has become a present-day* problem for the inhabitants* of Mars.

The immediate* pressure* of necessity* has brightened* their intellects, enlarged* their powers, and hardened* their hearts.

And (looking across space with instruments*, and intelligences such as* we have scarcely dreamed of), they see, 《at its nearest distance only 35,000,000 of miles sunward* of them》, a morning star of hope, our own warmer planet, green with vegetation* and grey with water, with a cloudy atmosphere* eloquent* of fertility*, with glimpses* through its drifting* cloud wisps* of broad* stretches* of populous* country and narrow, navy-crowded seas.

我々の惑星をいつか襲うに違いない永年の寒冷化は実に遠い我々の隣人のところでは、既に、はるかに進行していた。 火星の自然の状況は大部分がまだ謎であるが、私たちは今、火星の赤道付近の地域でさえ、真昼の気温が私たちの最も寒い冬の真昼の気温に辛うじて届くくらいであることを知っている。 火星の大気は我々の惑星よりさらに希薄で、海は表面の３分の１を除き覆われるまで小さくなり、ゆっくりとした季節が変わるにつれて、巨大な冠雪は北極や南極に集まって溶けて、定期的に温暖な地域を水浸しにする。 我々にとってまだ信じられないほど遠い未来の、海や資源などが枯渇する最後の段階は火星の住人にとって、現在の問題となっていた。 その即時の必要性の圧力は火星の知的生命体の未来を明るくし、力を増やし、心を非情にした。 そして、道具を使い、我々がほとんど夢にも見ないような知性で彼らが宇宙の向こう側を見たとき、太陽に向かって（地球と）最短の距離がたった3500万マイルである彼らは、希望の朝の星、我々自身の暖かい星、草木の緑と水の灰色を見た。その星は肥沃さをよく表す曇りの大気に覆われ、人口の多い国と狭く艦隊が群れる海の大きな広がりの上に巻雲がさまよっていた。

And we men, 《the creatures 〔who inhabit* this earth〕》, must be (to them) (at least) as alien* and lowly* as are the monkeys and lemurs* to us.

inhabit→住む　alien→異質な　lowly→卑しい　lemurs→キツネザル

「as are the monkeys and lemurs」とありますが、倒置です。「as the monkeys and lemurs are」というのが本来の形です。

The intellectual* side of man already admits 【that life is an incessant* struggle* for existence, and it would seem 【that this too is the belief* of the minds upon Mars】】.

Their world is far gone in its cooling and this world is still crowded with life, but crowded only 〔with what they regard* as inferior animals〕.

To carry warfare* sunward is, 《indeed》, their only escape* from the destruction* 〔that, 《generation after generation》, creeps* upon them〕.

＜第５段落　訳＞

そして、地球に住む生物である私たち人々は、彼ら（火星人）にとって、少なくとも、私たちにとってのサルとキツネザル同様、異質で卑しいに違いない。 知識のある側の人は、生命は存在をめぐる絶え間ない争いであり、このことも火星の人々の信念であるように思われるということを既に認めていた。 彼らの世界は冷却が深く進み、この世界はまだ生命であふれていたが、この世界は彼らが劣った動物としてみなすものだけであふれていた。 太陽の方へ（＝地球へ）戦争を運んでくることは、彼らに世代から世代へと忍び寄る破壊からの実に唯一の脱出であった。
